We, a collection of free citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, having gathered, peacefully and of our own accord to deliberate on the situation of electricity supply in our country, do, on this day, the 29th and 30th day of September, the year of the Lord 2009, hereby issue the following resolution:
We recognize and are aware that poor electricity supply has been the norm in this country for the past three decades.
We understand that most Nigerians view the situation with the power sector as hopeless and without remedy.
We are cognizant of the fact that the poor state of electricity supply in the country has, and continues to cost individuals, homes and businesses significantly.
We are of the opinion that our national development and economic revival is dependent on the state of our electricity supply infrastructure.
We are aware of efforts and attempts of Government to solve the power problem
We are of the opinion that these efforts, though noble, have fallen far short of expectations.
We are aware of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2006 and its intent to decentralize and reform the power supply in Nigeria.
We are of the opinion that the reform is slow and has been poorly communicated to the masses.
We wholeheartedly support the #LightUpNigeria campaign to galvanize both Government and Citizens to action to solve the perennial power problems.
We believe that the problem can only be solved by concerted and prioritized efforts from Government supported by the citizenry.
We therefore charge and encourage all Nigerians everywhere to do the following:
1. Speak out boldly about the power problems in our country.
2. Engage the National Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) (particularly to understand the nature of the issues slowing down the reforms) with a view to demanding speedy action.
3. Demand more commitment from their Government at all levels - Local, State and Federal.
4. Demand commitment from corporate organizations like Banks, Oil Companies etc to invest in the power sector.
5. Engage each other and the Government in dialogue via any medium they can summon (particularly in a town hall meeting that they organize, inviting, for instance, representatives of NERC and the Ministry of Power or even a local or state government functionary).
6. Eschew all acts of sabotage on Electricity Infrastructure and all other related installations.
7. Discourage and report to the relevant authorities any such acts of sabotage that they might be in knowledge of.
8. Issue proclamations like this from such gatherings that they organize and send such proclamations to info@lightupnigeria.org for circulation to all interested Nigerians.
We can act together to change this country! God bless Nigeria!
