Default Trend #LightUpNigeria on Twitter

First of all I will like to give a 'double thumbs-up' the the guys who started this movement and whoever is behind this website, your labors will not be in vain.

In as much as I am strong advocate of the #lightupnigeria movement on facebook and twitter, I try not to go into details of other more concrete ways to push the movement forward since am not 'on ground' in Nigeria so I stay focused on the part I can play right now: which in 'web awareness', hence the trending of our movement on twitter.

We have tried to achieve this more than once, the last time on the 13th of August, 2009, follow this link to read more about that and also why trending the topic is a plus:http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref...d=116089418074
A lot of people showed interest but unfortunately we couldn't mobilize effectively, we don't have enough Nigerians on twitter to trend it all by ourselves. After the last attempt, I mused over how we could get to achieve this and lo and behold, Temi Kolawole came up with an apt article on the movement and suggestion on how we can trend on twitter, I recommend you read more about it here: http://temi.info/

Once again, my apologies for limiting my involvement (at the moment) to twitter trending of the topic. I am pursuing my Masters degree at the moment in the US and this is how much time and proximity would permit me to be involved.

After reading the two links I provided, how do you think we could best go about getting to take the movement global by trending it on twitter?

I believe we can do it and if I can get more people 'actively' interested in achieving , I will draw up a detailed strategy on how to proceed.

Together, we can!

I support this effort and I think you can lead this effort. How do you think we can go about actualizing your suggestions?

Don't you think we need more supporters recruited to twitter?

What is the simplest way to get people registered to twitter using their phones?

Can we have a catalog of twitter HOW-TOs for different devices?

Who can help with sourcing these from the web?

Ok, nice one Amara. I would (by this weekend, I hope) draft a plan of how I think we can actualize my suggestions (it will be tailored along some lines of sturvsman's idea).
I agree we need to get more people on twitter...the point is I actually got a lot of personal peeps to register but they just wont TWEET (yet)!!
The simplest way for people to register on twitter is on web (can it be done by text to 40404?). I would look into this but if anyone can volunteer to do the documentation of HOW-TOs, I will be delighted.
The main thrust of this campaign would be to get a million twitter-follower celeb to RT our cause...
We also need help from our own 9ja celebs to push this on their FB and tweet accounts to get more Nigerians to tweet.

I find this part of Temi's blog entry particularly useful:

Quote:
Rally the support of Twitter celebrities. Imagine @souljaboytellem or @iamdiddy or @aplusk or @oprah asking everyone to type in #lightupnigeria? Their “followers” are sure to follow. This will probably trigger option#1 above too and attract international media coverage. So think of it as a 2-in-1 without the need to take any clothes off. One way of getting this done without actually knowing any of these celebs is for everyone who types in #lightupnigeria right now to add @iamdiddy to it to attract Diddy’s attention and maybe if in 1 day he gets 500 @ replies with #ligthtupnigeria in them, he’d get a bit curious. Oprah is probably the best celeb to target with this but I’m not sure she checks her Twitter herself.
We shuld push this on twitter.

Uh oh! I somehow forgot about this:

I have come to believe to trend #LightUpNigeria is not such a big deal afterall, I mean someone like Fabulous can make the most 'senseless' topics the number one Trending Topic in less than 30mins (and to even think the dude has less than 400,000 followers) compared with folks like Questlove (of The Roots) , Shaq, Diddy, Dwight Howard etc (who have over a million followers). A.Kutcher is almost at 4million now I think.

Anyways, my point is this: We know by now that we cant trend this on our own as Nigerians on twitter, we need external tweets.

A way to do this is to create a major buzz that will cause an internet ripple for like an hour so and find a way to bring #lightupnigeria up. Balloon boy is now world famous for 'nothing'...For example I suggest a diehard Naija fan, US/UK based run naked in the streets with #lightupnigeria painted all over his/her body (making sure media attention is nearby tho) It will be next to impossible to get a volunteer for this. I wont do it even #foramilliondollars!

OK, seriously now, an easy way to do this is to get all #LightUpNigeria fans to follow the celebs with high number of followers and bombard them with replies on twitter (@-ing them) till they respond. We could make Fabulous our number 1 target for quicker response. Hopefully by the time they see so many tweets @ them about the same topic they might get curious and RT our cause.

And before we do this, we have to be ready for the Tworld too see and feel our electricity supple problems as Nigerians, we must have #lightupnigeria videos and materials circulating to be RT-ed.

Then the Naija powers that be on twitter could help us proclaim Wednesdays as a #LightUpNigeria day for Naija tweeters to concentrate on the cause to Light Up the nation.

Cheers.
TK.

PS: Someone here is laffing her ass off and taunting me about the hopelessness of this cause, she said we should just pray everyone of us should have enuf money to get correct mikano gens, she believes the problem is unsolvable! I hope to prove folks like this wrong...God bless Nigeria!

Correct observation tobenna,
A good way to start might be get the folks at the forefront of the #lightupnigeria campaign to tweet and REtweet this link and stategy and get as many Nigerians on twitter involved
